Psychedelic Dance Music

Psychedelic Dance Music and The Shaman DJ

'Psychedelic Dance Music' is a style of electronic dance music that has been pioneered by international DJ and Producer Paul Edge.It originated in the USA in 2005 . Not to be confused with Psy-Trance, Psychedelic Dance Music is strongly influenced by elements of Techno and Acid House and focuses on the neurological effects of frequency interaction.

Whilst working on a rework project for iconic band The Doors, Paul Edge observed that due to the limitations of recording techniques of the late 60..s, an unusual frequency interaction was occurring. He then proceeded to study live concerts from artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin to ascertain if the same phenomena occurred, which not surprisingly it did. Fundamentally, he theorised, that due to feedback in a live setting, identical sounds were interpretated by the brain at different frequency levels creating a frequency differential that causes similar effects to those listed by Binaural beats. When applied to techno or similar music, the act of mixing two records by DJs also created this frequency differential, as the sounds whilst similar, were invariably "pitched up" or "pitched down" to ensure correct beat matching, thus creating a frequency differential. Edge recognised that certain frequencies have an undisputable effect on the brain, something explored by Nikola Tesla in the first half of the 20th Century, and theorised if he could incorporate sub-binaural theory into electronic dance music, specific frequencies could effect how the audience responds emotionally to the music. A study by Centro Studi Farmacotossicodipendenze, Az. USL di Parma, Italy, showed that listening to listening to techno-music induces changes in neurotransmitters, peptides and hormonal reactions, related to mental state and emotional involvement: personality traits and temperament may influence the wide inter-individual variability in response to music . From this, Pyschedelic Dance Music was born.

The frequencies employed have long been recognised as having an effect on the brain. A frequency differential of approximately 10 htz for example, results in an enhanced release of serotonin & mood elevator and is considered universally beneficial.

For the neurological effects of Psychedelic Dance Music to impact an audience, it is believed that a minimum of 1 hour is needed. The purpose of a one hour minimum performance time is that it allows the brain to synchronize with the parallel frequencies. Enhancing the music is a highly specialised visual show based on the principles of Psychoacoustics.
